Research is integral to the mission of St. Matthew's University. SMU understands that the everyday practice of modern medicine is now more than ever an endless research studentship, with the veterinarian needing to comprehend and critically address the accelerating pace of relevant emerging science and medical techniques. SMU believes that critical analytic thinking and quantitative understanding is essential to modern clinical practice based on best evidence and proper decision making. Last but not least, SMU also understands that some students will ultimately follow careers in academic or industrial research, government health-related agencies, and healthcare services at many levels, and that such broader opportunities may only be accessible by evidence of sound education in research principles and practice. By engaging faculty and students in the understanding and active practice of research, we demonstrate our commitment to the success of our students and the up-to-date expertise and professional development of our faculty.
St Matthew's plans to develop student research skills in many areas and to establish itself as a center of excellence in emerging strengths. A dynamic environment for research is accomplished through embedding research across the basic and clinical science curriculum. Students assimilate content through critical reading, thinking, Internet research, and participating in research, epidemiological, and interview-based studies approved and monitored by St. Matthew's Institutional Review Board. The further experience of students is achieved through the intellectual discussions offered by the ongoing research seminar series and a student Research Club. Throughout the courses, integration of an inquiry-based focus curriculum offered through the research emphases allows our students to evaluate medical content and significance more deeply, thereby ensuring greater retention through meaningful learning.
This training goes beyond the classroom into the community involving patient-contact activities and public clinical screening studies, including collaborations with the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture. Such a learning environment provides a seamless transition from the basic to the clinical sciences program and further into their advanced clinical training. The intention of the program is to ensure that our students are adept at translating or applying their knowledge of basic science to the clinical setting.
