In July 2008, St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine will host their first official MARVET course in association with Boatswain's Beach / The Turtle Farm. The course will combine lectures, wetlabs and field activities based on Tropical Conservation Medicine focusing on veterinary care and rehabilitation of sea turtles as well as fish medicine. Concepts in conservation medicine, emerging diseases in marine species, anatomy and physiology of marine mammals, reptiles and fish, sea turtle medicine, fish medicine, coral reef biology and restoration, and mangrove ecosystems will be addressed amongst other topics. Wetlabs will allow students to participate in physical examinations, hematology, biopsy, ultrasonography and necropsy techniques under the direction of veterinarians and biologists that are seasoned experts in the field of marine and conservation medicine.
