Cayman Heart Fund

St. Matthew's continues its ongoing collaboration with the Cayman Heart Fund in addressing various aspects of cardiovascular disease. This focus involves early detection, prevention and current treatment strategies. Several projects conducted include the following:

First Cayman Islands International Cardiac Symposium

Venue: St. Matthew's University;

Attendees: Medical and Allied Health Care Professionals, Faculty and Students of St. Matthew's University;

Patron: His Excellency the Governor of the Cayman Islands, Mr. Stuart Jack CVO;

Opening of symposium by the Honorable Mr. Anthony Eden OBE JP, Cayman Islands Minister of Health and Human Services;

Moderators: Dr. Sook Yin, M.D., Medical Director of the Cayman Heart Fund

Cayman Heart Fair

Opening of Fair by Governor Stuart Jack.

Attendees: General Public       

Booth Exhibitions by US hospitals to showcase cardiac care as well as by the Cayman Islands Medical and Dental Society , the latter represented by local doctors. US cardiologists gave a 20 min presentation to the public on a topic related to Cardiovascular Disease. Workshops were also conducted by these physicians. All discussions were for the purpose of educating the local population. Besides the cardiologists speaking at the symposium noted above, nutritionists and exercise professionals also gave presentations. SMU students supported local doctors with screening for cardiac disease risk factors.

Cayman Kidney Foundation

Ongoing collaboration between St. Matthew's University and the Kidney Foundation involves the participation in World Kidney Day, hosting a Speaker Forum presented by Dr. Everard Barton, Head of Nephrology, University of the West Indies and preparation / participating in an on-island kidney screening study with Dr. Frits Hendriks, Nephrologist and Co-Founder of the Cayman Islands Kidney Foundation.

Hyperbaric Medicine

Collaboration occurs between the university, the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority and the Cayman Hyperbaric Chamber Services. This relationship involves participation in the research seminar series speaker forum; conducting a Driver-Tender course and faculty research.

Chamber Driver-Tender Course

Course Leaders: Dr. Fiona Robertson M.D., John Elliott CHT, Dr. Donna Patey, M.D. Most of our course leaders are members of the Undersea Hyperbaric Medical Society

Train medical students in conducting a neurological exam assessment, a complete history and physical, as well as shadowing the ER team. Assist in monitoring the patient during chamber treatment. Further instruction advances the student towards certification as a Chamber Driver.

Cayman-German Society

Research Collaboration occurs between St. Matthew's University and the University of Munich (Dr. Weissenbacher ---Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

  • Promote a current discussion on clinical topics on Immunology and Dermatology as it relates to Obstetrics and Gynecology.

  • Engage in a regular discussion amongst an international group of medical scientists through the European Congress Meetings on Obstetrics and Gynecology
